Why Puppy Culture?
Why should I care?
One of the primary factors in how happy people are with their pet is how well socialized and desensitized the dog is. It's simply more upsetting when you have a dog that's frightened of new places, or people, or other dogs. It's also true that many common behavioral issues are sometimes poor socialization in disguise; a poorly socialized dog may appear aggressive, pull on a leash, or bark incessantly and inappropriately.
How does this help the puppy?
Puppy Culture is a system of daily stimulation and socialization. Each day the breeder (or new owner, after the puppy goes home) introduces the puppy to a new experience. This gets the dog used to continually encountering new things, and leads to a dog with much healthier reactions to the usual stresses of a pet (moving, meeting other animals, walking in strange places, etc.)
I don't have enough time for daily new experiences!
Experiences that are new to your puppy don't have to be a lot of work for you! There are a lot of options for days you don't have much time, like giving them a new toy or simply exposing them to some chore that they haven't seen before. The first time you turn on your vacuum cleaner is quite the experience for a dog!
How long should I continue puppy culture?
The principles of Puppy Culture should be continued throughout life while the rigid rules will fade away. The principles include clear communication, positive training, and positive social experiences. Continuing these principles not only instills great habits in your family and friends group, it also ensures your dog will lead a mentally and socially healthy life.
